Search for “France” on YouTube, and the current crop of results includes some clips shot in that country. Other top results include soccer games, music videos, and a Bill Maher talk. So, as what seems like a mildly useful upgrade, YouTube intends to let users “find videos tagged to a certain location,” according to Liz Gannes. No release date has been announced, but this probably isn’t too far off.

Hope you don’t mind Viacom getting a good idea of your likes and dislikes. As a way of moving a $1 billion copyright infringement case forward, a judge has ruled that YouTube must share records of who has watched what (including IP addresses and user login names) with the media corporation. The only slightly comforting thing is that Viacom is supposed to use the info only for proving the pervasiveness of privacy.

YouTube’s hugely popular, and has been for a long time. The real news here relates to money. Forbes reports, “[I]t appears that YouTube will generate $200 million this year and maybe $350 million the next.” Those two totals don’t add up to $1.65 billion, of course, but they suggest that Google is getting the hang of managing its star video-sharing site.

If you’ve ever put a video on YouTube and wondered about the people who watched it, Google’s trying to answer at least a few questions with its new YouTube Insight tool. Users will be able to look at data related to geographic regions, time, and any video’s overall category to see what they’re doing right and wrong. “As for now, you can find currently available metrics by clicking under the ‘About this Video’ button under ‘My account > Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos,” a post on the YouTube Blog states.

A new YouTube player is arriving (for at least some people), and although it’s not revolutionary, some mildly clever revisions have been made. The most significant may be the option (marked by the words “watch in higher quality” or “watch in standard quality”) to change between different versions of videos. Keyboard shortcuts have also been enabled, and there’s a slight visual update, as well.

There’s little more than pride at stake, but if you want to have a say in which YouTube content creators get recognized for their work, now’s the time to do it. There are six nominees in each category, and twelve categories in all, so you’ll need to set a fair amount of time aside in order to watch everything. Voting will continue through the end of March 19th, with winners being announced on March 21st.

While YouTube continues to remain focused on user-generated content, Zooppa is a startup that aims for users to create their own ads. Users can read briefs from companies and take a stab at creating their own ad for it. If they win, the earn “Zoopp Dollars” which are equivalent to US Dollars with the exception that you can’t cash out until your balance is $1,000. The site is missing all of the typical social elements you would expect like top rated videos and recently released ads, but the idea is creative and paying users for content is in strong demand these days.

eMarketer has released some survey results for kids age 17-24 and the results look good for Facebook. #1 preferred social network by Females and Males alike with Myspace falling to #6 with males. This certainly validates Facebook as a company that is nowhere near its peak yet.

YouTube to pay for copyrighted music in videos. Google/Youtube have struck a deal with Wind-Up records to share revenue from ads displayed when videos with their label’s music are played. They have not announced how much revenue would be shared or what technology they will be using to filter copyrighted music in videos.

Google inserting Video into search results. Is this evil? Many are not happy that by inserting Google Video and Youtube videos directly into the search result, it weeds out the competition, but I’m not so sure. Perhaps I’ve already drank the kool-aid but the integration seems a logical step for Google and at the moment is not intrusive. If Google increases Pagerank on their own videos to beat the competition to the top search result, now that would be evil.

Hi-tech entrepreneurs mull build or sell as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerburg and other rising stars of the online arena expand their companies and revenue. Everybody wants to be the next Youtube without shooting the moon and becoming the sequel to Friendster.

Google to start filtering Youtube videos. Looks like they will be using Audible Magic’s technology, which was recently adopted by Myspace to filter content. For media companies this move may be too little too late on Youtube’s part.
