Online Television Gaining Ground

Online television isn’t exactly omnipresent, but it is at least gaining round.  A new press release from The Conference Board and TNS claims that “[n]early one-fifth of American households who use the internet watch television broadcasts online, double the viewership from 2006.”  Hulu and The WB are already here; look for big companies and advertisers to continue taking advantage of this trend to the best of their abilities.

Blinkx Aims To Acquire MIVA

Doug August 8th, 2008

Users of Blinkx may want to brace themselves for some advertising; the video search site has announced its intention of acquiring MIVA, which “means business” according to a sparse official site.  Since the combination of online video and advertising has yet to prove too profitable, this development could either lead the way to a whole lot of changes on more popular sites or simply annoy a few people and then disappear.  Hat tip goes to Nathania Johnson.

Hulu Still Generally Unheard Of

Doug July 18th, 2008

The few people that use Hulu like it a lot.  New and old shows, in high quality and for free - the site is hard to beat.  Unfortunately for those would profit off Hulu, Daisy Whitney reports, “only 15% of online Americans have even heard of Hulu.com.”  Hulu appears to draw what advertisers view as an admirable audience - young, wealthier-than-average males - but it’s going to have to do something about that 15 percent stat before much else falls into place.

YouTube Unveils Upscale Screening Room

Doug June 20th, 2008

YouTube’s ready to develop beyond a place where people watch short videos of random individuals kicking each other in the crotch.  Within the new Screening Room, quality clips made by real filmmakers (and often lasting more than ten minutes) are being put on display.  These aren’t the full-length television episodes and Hollywood movies that can be seen elsewhere, but sites like Hulu still might want to watch out.

YouTube Offers Viewer Demographic Stats

Doug May 16th, 2008

If you’ve ever put a video on YouTube and wondered about the people who watched it, Google’s trying to answer at least a few questions with its new YouTube Insight tool.  Users will be able to look at data related to geographic regions, time, and any video’s overall category to see what they’re doing right and wrong.  “As for now, you can find currently available metrics by clicking under the ‘About this Video’ button under ‘My account > Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos,” a post on the YouTube Blog states.

Blinkx Maybe-Possibly Up For Sale

Doug May 9th, 2008

Earlier today, there were rumors that both Google and News Corp might have been bidding for Blinkx, and the company’s stock shot up as a result. Blinkx officials have since said that they aren’t aware of any offers, however, and so things are returning to normal. Still, Blinkx (and the video-sharing space as a whole) will bear watching over the next few weeks.

New YouTube Player Debuting

Doug May 2nd, 2008

A new YouTube player is arriving (for at least some people), and although it’s not revolutionary, some mildly clever revisions have been made.  The most significant may be the option (marked by the words “watch in higher quality” or “watch in standard quality”) to change between different versions of videos.  Keyboard shortcuts have also been enabled, and there’s a slight visual update, as well.

Google Video Redesign Goes Into Effect

Doug April 18th, 2008

Maybe you use Blinkx, DailyMotion, or any of the dozen other popular video-sharing sites (including Google’s own YouTube).  But Google Video’s been updated, and a few different layout options - along the ability to show what videos have been popular in the past - makes it a little more unique.  Also, even if rolling Google Video into YouTube seems like a logical thing to do, the company’s promised to make separate Google Video updates for at least a little while.

Voting For 2008 YouTube Awards Begins

Doug March 14th, 2008

There’s little more than pride at stake, but if you want to have a say in which YouTube content creators get recognized for their work, now’s the time to do it.  There are six nominees in each category, and twelve categories in all, so you’ll need to set a fair amount of time aside in order to watch everything.  Voting will continue through the end of March 19th, with winners being announced on March 21st.

YouTube’s Chen Pushing For Live Video

Tim February 29th, 2008

If, when watching people hit each other in the crotch on YouTube, you’ve ever wished it was happening in real time, your dream may soon come true; in an interview with Sarah Meyers, Steve Chen said that he wants live video on YouTube by the end of the year. Official statements - Chen’s comment was made at what looks like a dark and noisy party - have yet to follow.

Yahoo Live Launches With Real-Time Video

Doug February 8th, 2008

Although it hardly got off to an auspicious start - something that starts with a “c” and rhymes with “brash” occurred - Yahoo Live, a new real-time video site, has launched. Yahoo’s marking the thing as an experimental release, and there’s no telling what’ll happen if the Microsoft acquisition goes through, but in the meantime, some moderately interesting performances are taking place, and about 1,300 people are tuned in.

Blinkx Makes A Big Content Deal

Doug January 18th, 2008

Blinkx sure can bring ‘em in - the video-sharing site has signed deals with a whopping 13 content providers.  None of them are exactly major studios, but neither are they tiny, and establishing a deal with 13 of anything is an accomplishment in and of itself.  Blinkx now claims to have indexed to about 18 million hours of video and audio content.

YouTube to pay for copyrighted music in videos

Tim February 27th, 2007

YouTube to pay for copyrighted music in videos. Google/Youtube have struck a deal with Wind-Up records to share revenue from ads displayed when videos with their label’s music are played. They have not announced how much revenue would be shared or what technology they will be using to filter copyrighted music in videos.

Google inserting Video into search results

Tim February 26th, 2007

Google inserting Video into search results. Is this evil? Many are not happy that by inserting Google Video and Youtube videos directly into the search result, it weeds out the competition, but I’m not so sure. Perhaps I’ve already drank the kool-aid but the integration seems a logical step for Google and at the moment is not intrusive. If Google increases Pagerank on their own videos to beat the competition to the top search result, now that would be evil.

Yahoo/Daily Show/Broadway Mashup?

Tim February 22nd, 2007

Yahoo/Daily Show/Broadway Mashup? Yahoo will take a chance with an offbeat singing reporter later this in the quarter with project called “Odd News Underground.” Odd indeed….
