It’s time to zoom out again and look at social networking as something of a whole. Turns out, it’s a good thing. A new study sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “found that youths use online networks to extend friendships, acquire technical skills, learn from each other, explore interests and develop expertise,” according to Sharon Noguchi. So Facebook it up – or let your children do so – without worrying that time spent on the site will do anyone harm.

Rather than touch on any specific site this week, let’s just look at the overall social media ecosystem. In short: it’s in great shape. A new report from Forrester states that a full 75 percent of American adults are using social tools this year, as opposed to just 57 percent in 2007. Given this fantastic rate of growth, we might well top out within a very short amount of time. (It must be assumed that some of the oldest and poorest people will never climb aboard).

Details are still scarce, but according to an official site, the Rockstar Social Club is “coming very soon.” It appears that typical social network features will be connected to games like the upcoming Grand Theft Auto release, and full-fledged social networks or MMOs may ensue. Wagner James Au has a bit more information; there’s no telling what this development might do to social networking’s reputation, but it would certainly make things a lot more interesting.

Here at DemoMarks we rate sites, review them, and pass on all the details. Yet, the discussion is a bit one-sided. Sure we offer the ability for users to comment and alter the ratings, but we’re the one’s doing the site reviews and therefore controlling what gets rated. Ratepoint takes site ratings and reviews to a more social level by allowing users to make friends and find people with similiar tastes based on the sites they’ve rated. It ends up being a great way to find out about new sites that match up with your interests. I’m all about making friends and finding new sites so I’m grabbin’ shotgun for some Ratepoint cruisin’.

Have you ever had this idea for a great web application? Something with tagging and google maps and possible a digg like voting system built in, or maybe something complete different. Problem is, you’re not a programmer and don’t have the money to hire one just to find out if your idea would be successful or not.
Well I’m not a programmer either and lucky for you and me, Ning has made a product that makes building a web application something that takes a matter of minutes (No, I’m not kidding). The idea intrigued me so we’ve decided to give them a run for their money and make a Web Application Review Site using their service. Here goes nothing!

Today we will be featuring a social networking service for teens called Piczo. “But Tim, you’re not a teen, and everyone uses Myspace anyway,” you might say. However, Piczo is gaining popularity in the UK and Canada, and as we’re about to show you, has quite a bit to offer that Myspace lacks. Piczo launched in 2004 and has earned notoriety not only from the increased customization available to the average user (it is literally a WYSIWYG website builder at heart) but also for the partnerships it has created with major players like YouTube, Flock, Photobucket, and others. Signup is easy, setup is another story, but we’ll get to those details in due time. Let’s demo it.
