In a bid to keep the 30-second tv ad alive on the web, Joost has landed some advertising deals with serious companies including Nike, Visa, and Coca-Cola. The contract is a 3 month trial term (which works well since they are still in beta). With so many large corporations partnering with Joost in terms of content and advertising it’s no wonder Joost is getting hyped up so much lately (and it may just live up to it).

Apparently there was a bug requiring people to enter an email address to post a comment, even though there’s no email form field in the comment section. That’s been fixed now so feel free to go comment on the reviews. By the way, my offer for a Joost invite by adding a comment review is still active. Any takers?

Today’s demo probably needs no introduction if you’ve been paying attention to the major tech blogs and social sites. Joost, formerly code-named The Venice Project, is the much-famed startup of Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa) which aims to bring television content to the web via streaming and p2p technology. Earlier in February they closed a deal with Viacom giving them access to many major content providers like MTV and VH1.
All of this sounds very promising but as the owner of a less than spectacular broadband connection I’m all too familiar with the amount of bandwidth needed to make streaming television and movies look seamless to the enduser. Plus, as all the hype builds around the secrecy of this project I’ve become more skeptical that perhaps in this case the magic might be in the mystery of the product. I recently managed to get my hand on a beta token and got permission to demo the product here so today we’ll be giving it a run for its money and see if Joost lives up to the hype.

Thanks to Allen over at CenterNetworks I managed to get a token last night to try out Joost. I’m hoping to do a demo here, but it’s still unclear whether their policy allows this since it is in private beta(see here). On a lighter note, I already have 2 invites to pass on. If you’d like to give Joost a try, all I’m asking is that you choose any of the reviews we’ve done so far and rate the web app by commenting in the post. Easy, eh?

Joost seals Viacom agreement giving them access to programming networks like MTV, Comedy Central, and VH1. Terms of the deals have not been disclosed but they will share revenue from advertising. I have yet to get ahold of a Joost invitation but from all the writeups this looks to be a killer app for bringing TV to the web once and for all.

BitTorrent to open digital media store on Monday and many are wondering how successful paid downloads will be in an atmosphere that has promoted free content for so long. BitTorrent has large userbase and could be a likely contender to Joost and other P2P online video networks, but in sales it is less likely that their loyal constituents will fork over dough for DRM-encumbered downloads of digital media.
