Google Video Redesign Goes Into Effect

Maybe you use Blinkx, DailyMotion, or any of the dozen other popular video-sharing sites (including Google’s own YouTube). But Google Video’s been updated, and a few different layout options – along the ability to show what videos have been popular in the past – makes it a little more unique. Also, even if rolling Google Video into YouTube seems like a logical thing to do, the company’s promised to make separate Google Video updates for at least a little while.

Google will finally be finishing off their online office suite with the much-requested Presentation application, at least that’s what Mashable is reporting (update:now official from Google). It’s not a surprise for sure, it was a glaring omission on their part for such a simple program that was missing in their Docs and Spreadsheets offering. No word on when they will roll out this feature as of yet.

Collaborative document editing platform “WriteWith” launched

Writewith, a startup funded by the Y Combinator team that fueled successes such as Reddit, Wufoo, Kiko, and many others, has officially launched. Although Google Docs and Spreadsheets already allows collaboration, Writewith has added some extra features such as subversion tracking and task management to the mix.

Microsoft attacks Google on Book Scanning. If Microsoft isn’t careful they could be biting the hand that feeds them. If gathering content and indexing it is viewed as illegal by the courts, web search could be dead.

Ambient Clock

The Ambient Clock is a cryptic device still in testing phase and they’re asking users to test their software platform. Basically it connects to Google Calendar and changes color based on scheduled event times. The clock itself has some extra markings to show what time events are scheduled in relation to the actual time. The software looks interesting but as a device it’s a bit gimmicky for my taste.

Google Reveals Clickfraud Numbers. Currently 10% of clicks are dealt with proactively and identified as fraud, only 0.02% are identified as fraud from the result of investigation from advertiser inquiry. The numbers are positive for Google but when they’re the ones reporting the numbers where are the checks and balances?

Photoshop will be brought online

Photoshop will be brought online. While online photo editors are not a new game and possibly a crowded market, Adobe will have the branding power to make this extremely successful. This announcement is a great foreshadowing of things to come from large companies like Adobe as it strengthens the trend previously set by the likes of Google and Microsoft that major applications can exist completely in an online environment.

YouTube to pay for copyrighted music in videos. Google/Youtube have struck a deal with Wind-Up records to share revenue from ads displayed when videos with their label’s music are played. They have not announced how much revenue would be shared or what technology they will be using to filter copyrighted music in videos.

Google inserting Video into search results. Is this evil? Many are not happy that by inserting Google Video and Youtube videos directly into the search result, it weeds out the competition, but I’m not so sure. Perhaps I’ve already drank the kool-aid but the integration seems a logical step for Google and at the moment is not intrusive. If Google increases Pagerank on their own videos to beat the competition to the top search result, now that would be evil.

Google to start filtering Youtube videos. Looks like they will be using Audible Magic’s technology, which was recently adopted by Myspace to filter content. For media companies this move may be too little too late on Youtube’s part.
